Dying to Live

Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost - Sermon Text: Matthew 16:24; Readings: Psalm 26; Jeremiah 15:15-21; Matthew 16:21-28
What can you give in exchange for your life? Nothing. Here’s the glory of the cross: Jesus gave His life in exchange for your life. In fact, He gave His life in exchange for the life of the world. Take up the cross that Jesus gives you, and embrace your death to sin. You have nothing to lose and a whole life to gain.

Our women’s Bible study was recently surprised by the number of times Jesus used the simple act of eating to fellowship with the people He came to save. To mention just a few examples — His ministry begins by changing water into wine at a wedding feast. He calls Matthew to follow Him and promptly attends a meal at Matthew’s home. He feeds 5,000 men plus countless women and children with five loaves of bread and two little fish. He eats at the home of Mary and Martha. He ends His ministry with the Passover feast, the Last Supper, with His disciples, and after the resurrection, we find Him cooking a meal for the astonished disciples. If you are a church that eats together often, keep it up. If you invite people over for a meal or meet for coffee and a donut, good for you. Never underestimate the importance of sharing a table with both friends and strangers. That’s what Jesus did.
