It is striking how many of Martin Luther’s personal letters to various individuals deal with the subject of melancholy — that complex mix of emotions, including loneliness, a sense of being forgotten or unseen, overwhelm, even despair, and loss of meaning. The Reformer’s consistent advice — don’t go it alone; get out and be with fellow Christians!
