Who Feels the Pain?

... we ourselves are comforted by God.

2 Corinthians 1:4

Hans Christian Andersen, born on this day in 1805, created the beloved fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea.” Only a true princess could feel the pain of the pea beneath many mattresses.

We feel pain more every day. Physical pain, mental pain, even spiritual pain. We are often content if we “feel good” in our bodies and minds. Oh, if we could only feel the pain of our sin as easily. Jesus does. He bore the pain of our sin in his body, mind, and spirit on the cross. He knows our pain firsthand. He comforts us in our spirits by forgiving our sins. That comfort gives us comfort to share with others when they are in any kind of pain.

Lonie Eatherton
Fenton, MO

Loving God, when we are in pain, we look to you for comfort. Help us to share that comfort with others. Amen.

Reflect: Lend a helping hand to someone who is less able than you are.

Read: Hebrews 4:15-16 and 1 Corinthians 1:3-4
