O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge ...

Psalm 7:1

Illness, relationship difficulties, or circumstances beyond our control are part of life. In the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, we read about David’s circumstances when enemies wanted to kill him. In his challenge, David did the practical thing — hiding in caves to save his life. He also did what was necessary: seek God, express his lament, and praise him for who he is.

David wrote several Psalms during his troubles. In Psalm 56:1, he pleads for help, “Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me ...” But he also chooses his focus, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (vs. 3).

In our struggles and life altering events, we have choices too. We do what’s practical, but we also do what’s essential — tell God our laments, praise him, and trust he will be with us.

Father, in uncertainties and challenges, help me to follow David’s example, to have confidence in you. Amen.

Reflect: Find passages that encourage you to have confidence in God’s presence in your trials.

Read: Psalm 56:9-11 and Psalm 142
