As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit ...
Matthew 13:23
Fruitful Christian lives reflect God’s love through thanks, praise, service, and obedience. On our own, these four things (especially obedience) are a mighty tall order. Thankfully, we’re not on our own. In the parable of the sower, Jesus provides the key to being able to live a fruitful life — hearing and understanding God’s Word.
Again, not leaving us on our own, God provides the key to understanding his Word. He sends “the Spirit of wisdom and understanding” (Isaiah 11:2), “... that we might understand the things freely given us by God” (1 Corinthians 2:12). When we understand his Word, the contrast between the impossible-to-keep law and the saving gospel of grace, we are moved by the Spirit to respond with thanks and praise and, yes, joyful service and obedience.
