Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
Proverbs 10:17
When I open my Bible, I most often look for encouragement. Yet, sometimes, I receive reproof from the Lord. Though it can feel uncomfortable, I’ve learned to receive this instruction from the Spirit with gladness.
One of the Holy Spirit’s main roles is to instruct us about God’s truth (John 16:13). As we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit opens our hearts to the truth we receive. He guides us as we seek to understand God’s will.
Sometimes when we read God’s Word, we will feel convicted. That’s often how the Holy Spirit works — not to shame us, but to renew our relationship with the Lord. We can then pivot back toward God in humility and repentance, and the Holy Spirit will give us gladness on the path to life.
