Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Philippians 2:4
“Happy to help.” This three-word email I received this morning reflects the essence of Christian service: we are grateful God gives us the opportunity, time, and talents to assist others. However, after years of serving, the joy can be overlooked.
We help because no one else will fill the Communion cups. We help with Sunday school because we volunteered 371⁄2 years ago. We help after Bible class because “somebody needs to put away the chairs.”
When we serve as we’re able, we don’t merely keep “the letter of the law;” our serving reflects the love of Jesus. In Galatians 5:13, St. Paul says plainly, “through love serve one another.” Joyful serving reflects our relationship with God. Let’s celebrate the feeling that accompanies walking in the Spirit by honestly being “happy to help.”

Holy Spirit, fill my heart with happiness that overflows when serving others. Amen.
Reflect: When did you recently experience joy while helping others?
