And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God!
2 Samuel 7:20
King David was a servant to the Lord, the true King. David’s servanthood was to lead Israel according to the will and Word of God. To serve God’s people is to serve the Lord God. Anointment to that service was God’s gift to David.
God anointed us in the waters of our Baptism. We, too, serve the Lord as the Holy Spirit gifts us. We serve the Church in faithful worship, membership, and fellowship. And we love our neighbor as ourselves. Love serves the good of others.
Martin Luther said, “A Christian is a perfectly free Lord of all, subject to none; a Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.” Both are true. In both, we love and serve God and our neighbor.
