Debt?

What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me?

Psalm 116:12

I really don’t like to feel indebted to anyone. I like helping others but accepting help ... not so much. I want to balance the scales when given a gift. Yet, I do not expect others to repay me to rebalance the scales. That balance can never be equal between God and man. His gift of redemption was too huge; the price too high for me to even contemplate trying to balance it.

That is okay. There is no debt for salvation. It is a gift of love already paid for by Jesus. So, how can I show my appreciation? Micah tells us “... to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

What does that look like in my life? Expressing my thanks continually, singing his praises loud and long, giving my service to others selflessly, and obeying his commands faithfully.

Father, everything we have comes from you. Thank you for your gifts. Amen.

Reflect: What does your response to God’s gifts look like?
