Woven Roots

September 4, 2026 | By Bethel Larsen

From whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint … makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Ephesians 4:16

Plans to replace a low retaining wall in my yard became a comedy of errors when a neighbor removed the “ant farm” of old timbers only to conclude that the blocks I had purchased were not suitable for the job. Then he moved away. Winter slammed into Michigan before a new handyman could begin rebuilding. I was afraid that the sandy soil would wash into a pile on the sidewalk. I need not have worried. A tight network of lily of the valley roots held the shape of the wall through a series of snowfalls. Spring blooms would coincide with completion of the project. In the Body of Christ, our “earthly props” often give way. Death, distance, or disease may threaten our “walls,” but we hold one another together in the love of Jesus. Our roots entwined through phone calls, texts, shared meals, hugs, and prayers.

Father, thank You for those who support me in trials. Give me wisdom and compassion to support others! Amen.

Reflect: Sing the hymn, “Blest Be the Tie That Binds” (LSB #649). Then reach out to a hurting friend!

Read: Psalm 133 and Ephesians 3:14-21
