For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.
Ephesians 2:8
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther made public his 95 Theses. In doing so, he stated that the main thing we need for the assurance of God’s forgiveness is not living a good life or performing good works — but trusting in God alone.
Luther insisted that we are, as the apostle Paul writes, saved only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. It gradually dawned on Luther that he was free. And he was loved.
Luther rediscovered what had always been there in the Scriptures. Read the clear, powerful words of Romans 3 and celebrate the Good News that we are saved by God’s grace through faith in His Son, our Savior.

Father, thank You for Your great salvation through Jesus. Help us to keep this Good News the main thing, today and always. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Reflect: “The main thing” is that God has saved us through Christ alone. Share that with someone today.
