The Gist of It

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

2 Corinthians 4:16

I don’t drive anymore. My spouse is God’s gift as she drives me around — despite my annoying directions on how to do that the “right” way. (You catch my gist.) I also live my traveling life in a spouse-powered wheelchair while making the rounds to various physicians — dermatologists, neurologists, cardiologists, archaeologists — well, maybe I should see a hyperbolist, too! All have proven helpful, and they are gifts from God. I’m appreciative, surprised, and impressed by the number of people who smile at me or who rush to help me through doors. They, too, are gifts from God — and some don’t even know the good they are doing — they just have the gist of good works. Be sure to smile at the smilers, too. They might just need such encouragement also. You might even lead them on with a “God bless you.”

Ed Grube

Dear Jesus, give me good health and gratitude for faith-filled caregivers. Most of all, thank You for caring. Amen.

Reflect: For which caregivers do you give most thanks? Why?

Read: Psalm 71:8 and Matthew 9:12
