But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work.
Deuteronomy 5:14a
My husband loves Sunday afternoon naps. He takes literally God’s command for a day of rest. My idea of a restorative afternoon usually involves reading a book, working on a project, or visiting with friends. Although we take different approaches to honor the rhythms of work and rest that God established by the third commandment, we’re committed to following the example that He set. Each week, we reserve one day to gather with God’s church and then spend time in activities that restore our bodies, minds, and souls.
When we do, we experience greater health, happiness, and peace. Our stress levels decrease, and our productivity increases. We’re learning that God knew exactly what He was doing when He gifted us with a day of rest.

Kind Father, thank You for the example of rest after You completed the work of creation. Help me take time to worship and rest each week. Amen.
Reflect: What activities do you find most restorative? Commit to pursue one of them on your next day of rest.
