Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes!
Psalm 119:5
I’ve given up on making New Year’s resolutions. Years of experience have convinced me that the practice only leads to failure and guilt. Yet, like the Psalm writer, I long to honor God by keeping His commandments. My resolve to walk in His ways happens not yearly, but daily. Like New Year’s resolutions, however, my ability to remain steadfast falls short.
I could give up trying, knowing that I will fail. I could succumb to the weight of guilt. But instead, I look to the One whose resolve to forgive and restore never wavers. Jesus died to pay the price for my failures; Jesus carries the guilt of my sin; Jesus lives so I may have a new life that is constantly being transformed into His likeness.

Jesus, my best intentions are not good enough when it comes to keeping Your commands. Thank You for forgiving me. Teach me daily to follow You. Amen.
Reflect: Consider how you fall short in keeping God’s commandments. Resolve to repent daily.
