And he took the children in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
Mark 10:16
School is back in session! As parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends, we pray for inspiring teachers, good health, fertile imaginations, and welcoming communities for students. We may know children who have struggled to survive “mean girls” or bullies. It hurts to see children being ridiculed or criticized. Being part of a healthy community can help children cope with these confrontations. A healthy community is a place of safety, care, and inclusion — no matter what your age! Jesus demonstrated that as He welcomed children onto His lap and into His ministry! Jesus also modeled how to make a community a better place through kindness, love, compassion, and acceptance. As we encounter children in this school year, let’s welcome them not only onto our laps, but into our communities, as Christ has welcomed us!

Jesus, thank You for being the model for acceptance and encouragement of children. Help us to follow Your example. Amen.
Reflect: Recall communities you were in as a child. How were you encouraged there?
