Fixing our eyes on Jesus … For the joy set before him he endured the cross …
Hebrews 12:2 NIV
Our focus should be on Jesus. He is our rock in times of trouble. Our defense in times of need. Yet, this verse mentions “for the joy set before him.” What joy? Flogging. Torture. Crucifixion. Death. That’s what lay ahead for Jesus. There’s nothing joyful about the moments leading to Jesus’ death, nor the death itself.
What was the joy that was set before Jesus? He was looking forward and anticipating the eternal victory that He would win through His sacrifice, death, and resurrection. He was envisioning eternity in Heaven. Jesus was looking to eternity and seeing you — YOU are the joy that was set before Jesus! Because of Jesus, one day, we can experience lasting peace. We praise Jesus that He faithfully endured the pain in our place, so we could share in His glory eternally.
