And a young man named Eutychus … sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer.
Acts 20:9a
Having spent my ministry career primarily with youth, I have always been drawn to this story. Unfortunately, I suspect I have put a few teens to sleep with some of my long-winded talks. We might be quick to point fingers. Who was responsible for allowing Eutychus to fall asleep and fall from a window? Paul talked on, not even noticing the young man. Those gathered were listening so intently they did not notice what was happening around them.
I think there is a parallel in terms of what can happen today. Young people can slip away from the church and most of us do not even notice. We can blame parents, or the church youth ministry team, but the reality is it is a community problem.
Jesus is the only hope for the world. That message must be passed on to the next generation.

Dear Jesus, keep me alert to those around me who might be drifting from their faith. Amen.
Reflect: Who is a young person in your life with whom you could establish a faith relationship?
