This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remains into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you.
Titus 1:5
How well do we listen? Often, not well. One inquires, “Did you really hear what the pastor was saying?” My response, “I listen through the text.” However, the message escapes me many times. Paul clearly instructs Titus. Titus is to appoint
elders who are faithful, above reproach, husband of one wife, and the list continues. Elders are overseers who are not arrogant, quick tempered, drunkards, greedy for gain, are hospitable, and lovers of good. To find qualified men is impossible without the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
In our world today, we really can’t help until we have listened to the person: his beliefs and real feelings toward God and the church. God’s “revealing Word” places prayer first. God has plans for us that will be revealed in HIS timing.

Lord, may I be the listener you want me to be so that those in my life may be helped. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Reflect: Is there someone who needs a listening ear in your life?
