Healing the Brokenhearted
9 17 26 HFL
September 17, 2026 | By Elizabeth Cavanaugh

For it is good to sing praises to our God. ... He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Psalm 147:1b, 3

Sometimes, at the loss of a loved one, it feels as though the heart breaks into so many pieces that there could never be enough cardiac glue to put it back together, at least not in any coherent or recognizable way. At that moment, kindness and compassion within a faith community help gather those wayward fragments. A caring someone’s prayer over the condition comes as a silent song to God, like a warm, engulfing hug or a mug of soothing hot chocolate offered with a listening ear. That melody and the Lord’s loving response can spill over in crescendo and douse some of the hopelessness and isolation, lifting the weight of sorrow.

That beautiful, communal song speaks directly to the heart so that, under the Lord’s care, it can be pieced back together and begin to heal.

Dear Lord, thank You for the wonderful people You put before me in my life to ease the way forward. Amen.

Reflect: Begin to name those you know who keep you connected to your faith through prayer.

Read: Psalm 34:18 and Revelation 21:4
