I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness, O my God …
Psalm 71:22
As a child, when I visited my grandparents, I’d look up toward the carriage and horses figurine on top of the tall Victrola cabinet. Granddaddy would say, “Let’s see what the horses brought you today.” Standing on tiptoe, to my delight, I’d find a pack of chewing gum on the horses’ backs. On each visit, my grandfather met my expectation.
As an adult, I’m learning to expect God’s faithfulness in every season. The psalmist David learned the same. Through life’s seasons and challenges — as a young shepherd, a warrior fleeing enemies, and the King of Israel — he learned to look upward and trust God’s faithfulness. We can look up to our heavenly Father with a daily expectation that He hears us and cares for us — in every season of life.
