Embracing Arms

And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

Mark 10:16

It was in the narthex of church. She saw the woman, recognized her needs, outstretched her arms and warmly said, “Bring it in.” And a holy hug ensued. A simple hug is a personal expression of compassion — understanding and extending the grace of God to another human being. Although there are no specific references that Jesus hugged others, it just seems part of His nature in that He was often found reaching out and touching people with His love and peace. A hug can often transfer what words cannot, and this act of kindness can guide us to express love and care through a simple physical action. As members of God’s “holy huddle,” we have the responsibility of enriching our communities of faith. Holy hugs are one valuable, visible means by which we encourage each other. Our extended, welcoming arms are an invitation to share in the grace of community. We are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord!

Lord, relax my arms and let them embrace someone in need of Your love. Amen.

Reflect: Think of ways your simple touch can convey the connections and oneness of community.
