Dotty was training to be a nurse; she married a newspaperman. Soon, she was delivering newspapers on her bicycle and writing a regular column. I asked her once if she ever wanted to pursue nursing, and she said she was content to be where God placed her. Whenever I wonder about turning points in my life, I think of Dotty.

One huge blessing of living into old age is the revelation that I am where God wants me to be. He dropped me in this pool, helped me swim along, and become part of a church community that nourishes me. Whispers of the Holy Spirit came through even when I wasn’t tuned in. In Luke 1, Mary, the mother of Jesus, found her calling dramatically; mine came in small doses. Slowly, I learned to answer, “Yes.”

Dear God, You have been with me from a time I did not know. Help me hear the whispers from Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
