For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you — that … we may be mutually encouraged.
Romans 1:11-12a
It is striking how many of Martin Luther’s personal letters to various individuals deal with the subject of melancholy — that complex mix of emotions, including loneliness, a sense of being forgotten or unseen, overwhelm, even despair, and loss of meaning. The Reformer’s consistent advice — don’t go it alone; get out and be with fellow Christians!
A former, beloved pastor of ours always marveled how, in engaging with others, joys are multiplied, but sorrows are diminished. The Creator knows what His creatures need. Involvement with others is key to a happy spiritual life. With fellowship comes resilience, empathy, perspective, and elation. To quote C. S. Lewis, we are “surprised by joy!” And our purpose in this life is renewed. Thank God for the gift of others!

Heavenly Father, help me to actively seek out conversations with those You have placed near me. Amen.
Reflect: What can I do to more regularly seek out other people?
