If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach ...

James 1:5

Causing someone we love pain feels like the biggest sin of all. Recently, my independent father began mysteriously ailing, and a new doctor urgently recommended a procedure that sounded like hope. The doctor’s call required a swift decision. Unfortunately, my rushed judgement caused my beloved father further suffering. If only I had taken time to pause in prayer. If only I had listened with faith and focus to God’s guidance. If only ...

Only God knows the whole plan. Maybe my good intentions that felt like mistakes act as lessons bringing me closer to the Lord. Maybe I am doing my best. Maybe I will do better. And just maybe, my dad will find peace and comfort despite, or because of, my shortcomings.

Elizabeth Cavanaugh
South Pasadena, CA

Dear Lord, please help us take time to listen to your wisdom, especially under pressure. Amen.

Reflect: Reach to God in prayer and lift burdens of guilt through his forgiveness.
