Blessed are the Caregivers
10 10 25 HFL

When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

Matthew 14:14

As I loaded my groceries onto the conveyor, the checkout girl greeted me with the prescribed welcome, “Did you find everything today?” Something about her flat tone caused me to look up. “Are you okay?” I asked. She choked back tears, nodded, and continued to bag my purchases.

When Jesus heard of His cousin John’s death, He sought privacy to grieve. Unknowingly, the people flocked to Him, interrupting His sadness and solitude. Out of compassion, Jesus helped and healed them. Did the people see the sorrow in His eyes? Or did their issues hinder their observations?

We are surrounded by dedicated caregivers who, at times, suppress their pain to assist us. Let’s not miss the opportunity to reciprocate compassion to those who serve us, for “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” (Matthew 5:7).

Jesus, help me remember to offer a smile or kind word of thanks to all who serve. Amen.

Reflect: Look and listen for opportunities to show kindness and gratitude today.
