… Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
Matthew 22:17
Jesus faces a “taxing” Tuesday in Holy Week. We, celebrating Holy Tuesday, face another April 15 Tax Day. In hatred, the above question was concocted by Jesus’ enemies. Oh, to trick Jesus into a death trap!
Always wise, Jesus responds that Caesar’s image is on the coins. Taxes are Rome’s. Much of the world has God’s “image” on it. All of that is God’s. Marveling at the response, Jesus’ enemies walk away.
On taxing Tuesday, let us remember: Jesus was not tricked by anyone to die for us. Jesus died to fulfill Scriptures (Mark 14:49). It was the Father’s will that Jesus die (Mark 14:36). Jesus died even loving those who did not accept Him (Mark 10:21). Jesus chose to die for you and for me. We are so loved by God.
