… whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.

Romans 14:8b

Stanza three of the hymn, Children of the Heavenly Father, is: “Neither life nor death shall ever, From the Lord His children sever; Unto them His grace He showeth, And their sorrows all He knoweth.” These lyrics resounded in my heart after hearing the unexpected news of a close friend of ours who found his wife, Jennifer, lying in bed one morning — she had passed on to her eternal home in glory. They were still unpacking boxes in their new retirement home in Florida … shocking!

Are you wondering how the devotion’s title fits this heartbreak? Despite the overwhelming season of sadness ahead for her loved ones, Jennifer is perfectly united and content in her Savior’s presence! She’s walking by sight, she’s finished the course, she sees Jesus’ face and worships at His feet. What could be better?

Comforting Savior, remind Your children that nothing will ever be able to separate us from Your love. Amen.

Reflect: Select the Bible readings and hymns for your funeral for your home-going celebration.

Read: Romans 8:35-39 and Romans 14:8-9
