WHAT IS PALM SUNDAY?
Palm Sunday 3 26
March 16, 2026

By Thomas Moll
Director of Content & Innovation

The Sunday before Easter, known as Palm Sunday, marks one of the most dramatic entrances in history. On this day, Jesus rode into Jerusalem, not as a conquering warrior on a warhorse, but as a humble king seated on a young donkey. The crowds who gathered that day couldn’t contain their joy — they spread their cloaks on the road before Him, waved palm branches, and shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matthew 21:9b ESV). What they witnessed was the fulfillment of ancient prophecy, though they didn’t yet understand the full meaning of the week ahead.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PALMS

In the ancient world, palm branches carried powerful symbolic meaning. They represented victory, triumph, and celebration — much like ticker tape parades or flag-waving today. When people waved palm branches to greet a dignitary, they were acknowledging that person’s authority and celebrating their arrival.

For the Jewish people specifically, palms held even deeper significance. They had been symbols of Jewish nationalism since the Maccabean period, appearing on coins and in celebrations of military victories. During the Feast of Tabernacles, one of Israel’s most joyful festivals, the people traditionally carried palm branches as part of their worship.

When the crowds greeted Jesus with palms, they were proclaiming Him as their king — the long-awaited Messiah who would deliver them. The Gospel of John tells us that people “took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him” (John 12:13a ESV), deliberately echoing how crowds would welcome a victorious king returning from battle. The prophet Zechariah had foretold this very moment: “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9a NIV).

Yet Jesus’ kingship would prove radically different from what the crowds expected. Within days, those same crowds would cry out for His crucifixion. The palms that welcomed the King of Peace would give way to the cross of suffering love.
